Remember me as a Martyr

Remember me as a Martyr

A Poem by Balkaran Sidhu
"

Where are those values of Indianism...

"
Let me not concieve more truths
about the contemporary brio,
for what the smoldering altruism
gave me some uncurable wounds.

All I had wished for was some lovingness
a benevolenct  existence
some inherent tender values
from my native purity.

But time enlightened me with scars
that nobody deserves,
what the fire of lust embossed
leaving a burn on my essence.

I was taken to a dark dark place

where the devils rule

where no humans had gone

I was rattled by ruthlessness

The blaze of unrelenting desires

bruised my entity

Now I feel hollow from inside

with a wounded soul I try to fight

My woed soul now needs some rest

as am too weak to fight this battle

And now when I have to say my final words

I won't say I am a victim of some tragedy
or a sufferer of some callous act
Am a martyr of a new awareness.

I am a source to a new consiousness
And thats how I shall be remembered!

Keep this flame of this discernment alive

For my sacrifice should not go in vain...

Author's Note

Balkaran Sidhu
She was a 23-year-old medical student, severely beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, was flown to Singapore in a critical condition by the Indian government on Thursday for specialist treatment....she passed away last night..died off multiple organ failure triggered by brain damage. It was a ruthless act ...the one which coudn'teven be imagined... :(
Well..certainly it would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel these emotions in the right way into a constructive course of action...

Your reference to her as a matyr says as much about Indian society as it does the nature of matyrdom according to gender. But the impression it creates of male callousness, ignorance, uncivil natures and the blatant disregard for the law is a message that would stay in view of the mind of the world.

In Malaysia recently, a young mother ( circumstances not reported ) living in the flats, delievered a baby and then from the third floor tossed the new foetus onto the road below.

These we get from the daily news. At WC, as practicing poets, we try to bring a perspective to these matters with all due regard for the overall nature of what we are as a society. We could do less with comments such as your author's note here. Write poetry, not politics!

thanx for ur remarks!
I like the fierce depth in this, there are a number of points where I find it a philosophical poem of synthesis and life-integration.

Lines that captured my attention most where:

1. I am a source to a new consiousness
2.for what the smoldering altruism
3.My woed soul now needs some rest

This is beautiful Balkaran and definitely captures the heart of a martyr. A new consciousness is desparately needed in this world, and sadly, given the way things are, many martyrs will be needed to bring about this change of consciousness. I truly wish it could come about another way...

Wow. Why haven't I heard of her? It's kind of sad that I didn't even know that this happened. I will remember her as a martyr. 100/100

Sad , may her soul rest in peace. Man's inhumanity to man some are awfully cruel.

Well said...Had to let you know I. Liked your comment
Your poem expresses a refrain heard many times throughout the world. Man's inhumanity to man is incomprehensible and unconscianable. We look forward to the day when people will be ruled by love and respect for each other. Take heart, some of those are already among us.
