ARCTIC

ARCTIC

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

Winter in the north

"
Windswept islands
rise from icy waters
deep folds in sheer rocks
tunnels ripple through them
sun dances above the horizon
eternal light eves
darkness recoils
White sand beaches
sweep the shoreline
clear, shallow aquamarine water
sandy bottom
fertile rolling hills
stretch to the granite mountains
Moose graze the high rocky cliffs
winter sweeps the sun away
hides behind the sea line
Darkness infiltrates for months
bitter cold forces the farmers
into their warm, cozy huts
until seasons reverse

I have a fascination with the arctic & you have satisfied my longing with a ton of vivid imagery for all the senses! I live on the California coast, which is a little bit wild in this area, without such cold icy overtones, as found in your roiling coastal descriptions. I love the way you describe the gnarly coastal features the most! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

The farmer's almanac predicts another winter just like last year's. How extraordinarily you've captured the ambience of winter and its stoic nature. Much enjoyed this one, Betty. Stay warm!
