A SUBTLE SMILE

A SUBTLE SMILE

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

with child

"

I stretch my long arms way up to an azure blue sky

with wispy clouds floating by

a slight chill in the air

yet the sun toasts my skin

I launch into mixed up daydreams

reflecting my erratic past

I try not to think of all my mistakes and misgivings

contrary, focus on notions of my future

this time with a subtle smile on my face

At once I sense motion and extend my hands

down to my belly

I massage it gently in hopes that my baby

takes notice  that these are my hands, your mother

I find my self repeating that word, mother

with a certain gratitude

I take note of my heavy breasts

n*****s enlarged

a bit of a chubby face

all in preparation of the exhilarating event

just now I am four months with child

flutters inside evoke the reality of what is to come

Still, I sit on this bench in wonderment

regarding the two of us

it shall be lovely if this baby has a father

who knows him

yet this is not possible  straightaway

perhaps in the future if we are lucky

My soldier shall appreciate us  and we shall transform into a family of three

the child will either meet or feel the father within...eventually.....
and will be so proud of him.

dearest Betty ... there are many circumstances that create an extraordinary person.... be it in a Novel or occurring in reality. It is amazing for a Woman to nourish her Child. All of Nature joins the Circle of Love. softly, Pat
