SHARON

SHARON

A Poem by Betty Hermelee
"

tribute to a rebel

"

You were a rebel and an advocate for so long

I followed your bravery, step by step

and admired your courage leap by leap

not a thing clogged your ability to pursue

you lived for your creativity

and shared out your result

you collected splendid pieces of art

more importantly you lived art

with your stunning paintings

and quilts

your compositions were exceptional

you partitioned your life

so that we all got equal time

your children, your brothers, your grandchildren

and me

To me your battle was long and agonizing

yet not by any means did you grumble

your voice was weak

yet you showed affection in many ways

your smile was still there

and you kept that pugnacity

until you could speak no more

could not bear another breath

death came serenely

Ah, Betty,
This really hits home. My mom is 96 and in hospice her mind as alive and well as ever, but she is frail and slowly weakening... She has always been a brilliant beauty just a 4'10" little elf, tougher than my Marine Corps Iwo Jima dad. The sun will dim a little when she is gone...

You have written a beautiful tribute to what sounds like a beautiful person. It made me reflect on the loss of my parents. They both died almost instantly at an age when they were still active, avoiding both the slow decline and loss of self that comes in very senior years, and avoiding the suffering that comes with so many diseasesof the aged, such as cancer. I am thankful for that.
