Abyss

Abyss

A Poem by Bhaarath Ramesh

Searching for light,
In the darkness,
She cannot find any,
But the light in her eyes.

She once rode on a flying carpet,
Looking for a faraway land,
The birds protected her,
From the sun and the rain.

In that pursuit,
She met an odd man,
Full of ideas,
But no tongue.

She took a break,
Not because she needed rest,
But out of sympathy,
For the birds.

The birds,
Acquiesced to her plea,
And left her alone,
She thanked them with all her heart.

During the break,
The man with no tongue,
Needed water,
She went to the river.

There in the river,
She saw lovely fishes,
And one queer piece,
Flapping towards her.

It had no eyes,
No gills,
No fins,
But acted as if on own volition.

She picked it up,
And put in her bag,
She filled water,
In her gourd.

The man drank,
His face,
A canvas,
Of gratitude.

The flying carpet,
Needed repair,
The man willfully helped,
And it took four years.

Oranges and apples,
Berries aplenty,
They ate and drank,
In mirth.

The man had inviting ears,
And words seemed to flow in them,
Like a stream opens,
Unto the sea.

Her words,
Her past,
Her present,
Her anxiety.

The man cried,
For four days,
And he hid it well,
As it rained heavily.

Then she suddenly felt a twist,
In her bag,
She put her hands in,
And took it out.

It was the man's tongue,
She gave it to him,
He attached it in,
Fit like a jigsaw piece.

His words,
His past,
His present,
His love.

Then they started together,
On the flying carpet,
To some faraway land,
Where the laws of humans were absent.

Then the tragedy happened,
A storm hit them ,
She fell off the carpet,
Into the abyss.

The man couldn't control,
The carpet just took him,
Faster towards the horizon.
He jumped.

In the abyss,
She searched for light,
This was her ultimate fear,
No hope could save her.

She started weeping,
And the abyss was flooded,
With her tears,
She was afloat.

Looking at her luck,
She was happy,
The tears had helped.
But she couldn't cry anymore.

The man yelled,
Her name,
In all the directions,
Nothing was heard back.

He kept walking hopelessly,
Suddenly he felt alone,
The biting cold,
Made him shiver in defense.

He saw a violin,
And the bow was pointing,
To the north,
A wide,black abyss.

He peered inside,
It was all dark,
Except for the white,
Of her eyes.

He was momentarily blinded,
And his tongue started slipping,
He adjusted it and spoke,
To her.

Then he dived in,
The tears buoyed him,
He caught her by the hip,
She saw him bathed in light.

Then as if by magic,
The birds returned,
Saw the man and the woman,
Solemnly hugging in the abyss.

The birds devised,
A clever ruse,
Stones aplenty,
Pushed them in the abyss.

It took four years,
Of continuous effort,
Then the man and woman,
Came out of the abyss.
