Halloween

Halloween

A Poem by H. E. Schreiter

A full moon

Rises tonight

Bathing everything

In a ghastly light

Shadows dance

As trees sway in the wind

Even by the light of the moon

It’s dark

Darker than the blackest black

Darker than the night of a new moon

The darkness hides the things moving in the night

Moving through the town

Moving past your window

Moving through your room

It is so quiet

Too quiet

You can hear everything

Footsteps running down the road

The rustling of brush

Scratching against your door

The monsters make themselves known

Vampires and werewolves

Witches and goblins

Demons and ghosts

Bringing terror to everyone

On this Hallow’s Eve

The children shiver and shake

Even the parents quake in fear tonight

As the begin their one-night reign

Over our world

Our terror makes them stronger

Makes their power grow

Stronger and more powerful than before

But when morning comes

Their power fades

And they leave this world

But they’ll return next year

For another night of terror.
