Ghosts

Ghosts

A Poem by Hayden Chambers

The song of my people

The struggle, the pain

The toil and the betrayal

Erased from history

I know this story well

Repeated throughout time

My people suffered

We have all forgotten now

Build your shopping centres

Blind yourself to the past

With the glaring neon lights

Surround yourself with the fake

The clothes that won't last

The electronic friend

Your constant companion

Distract, distract

Don't remember how it was

For so many before

It's all over now

There is no returning to that time.

But the ghosts of our ancestors

Surround us still

The land is scarred

From the ancient battles

Walking by the river

Stepping over the coal

That lies exposed on the path

Your forefathers died for this

They spent their lives in the dark

So you don't have to

A better life now?

Live your life to make them proud

The wall still stands by the road

Where cars scream past

Containing unseeing eyes

Forget, forget.

Everything you were

Is still around you now.

But I can't turn away

From the images I still see.
