Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition

A Poem by Hayden Chambers
"

The difference between two lands

"

Footsteps reverberate

From closed buildings

In the early morning hush

As the sleeping city wakes

I go through my day

Walking along city streets

The buildings, cars, people, noise

Meanwhile I'm dreaming of another place

The moors, mountains, lochs, beaches

Lost in a different world

So far from here

I long for the freedom of the islands

I remember the mountains

The wide expanse of the moors

The stone circles and crofts

Beaches of impossibly white sand

Longing to return to the Hebrides

To one day escape these city confines

The difference between the city

And the Hebrides is an entire universe

The unforgiving paving slabs

Solid under my polished shoes

I long for the soft Peat

Under my muddy boots

This shirt uncomfortable

I'd rather wear an old tshirt

Jeans ripped and stained

Mud covered from honest work
