The Fellowship of Man

The Fellowship of Man

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

People can be so cruel
when they don't get what they want
You think they are your friend
but then they shut you off

As soon as you don't fulfil
all their wants and needs
They just stab you in the heart
leave your soul to bleed

Whatever happened to friendship
to the fellowship of man
To caring for your neighbour
lending a helping hand

These days we only give
when we want something in return
Genuine love and friendship
is impossible to earn

This is how the world
thinks and acts today
Real charity and goodness
are from a bygone age

Lets open up our hearts
give to those in need
Shine a little light
let go of all our greed

Lets offer up our friendship
expecting nothing in return
Give a little kindness
live and love and learn

Offer help, hope and warmth
without expecting a single thing
And we might just be surprised
at how much joy giving brings

Outstanding. Both the skill with which you wrote and the all-important message are excellent. Having grown up in poverty, this subject is very close to my heart. Some may call it kharma, but whatever it may be, I believe a score is kept, and that which one sows, so shall they reap. If they offer compassion and charity, it will come back to them. This same message is found in the Bible.

your welcome
sad but true and this site has its share of these people. However just because some think narcecissm is a traight held only by our race doesnt mean we all subscribe to it . may we all try to be better men and women for examples to our children

This is so, so true. Being a sixties baby, i have seen a lot of changes in attitude as well as progression. To be honest I'm not even sure some would be progression. We have lost values of people within our lives and communities. For me personally a simple smile can make all the difference to someone's day.
Thank for this wonderful poem.

Thank you :)
Truly idealistic and reminiscent of a world that has, sadly, passed us by. The 'me' generation has taken over, and left no thought for others today. It would be nice, Carolann, but the only place I've seen those simple aspirations actually working was in China, amongst some of the poorest people in the world.

Yes I believe that the poorest people can be the most giving. Thank you.
I may be a man with history from a bygone age but I still believe that giving comes before receiving, to respect others is the way to be respected. A smile costs nothing and to help someone gives a purpose for the heart to beat.

Yes very true. Thank you
The truth in this poem holds what every person had experienced in life. To be betrayed and left for nothing in return but just pieces of shells is what holds reality far often seen in front of us. It's really hard to choose friends that will stay with you in times of danger and helplessness. As you said it, it's because of greed which drives people to do such things but lies are also one thing. I can't say anymore except that this piece is truly remarkable. Thanks for sharing!

True; peace cannot happen unless we open our
Hearts and realize we are one species and thus
Should be united. Great write!
