The Fellowship of Man

The Fellowship of Man

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

People can be so cruel
when they don't get what they want
You think they are your friend
but then they shut you off

As soon as you don't fulfil
all their wants and needs
They just stab you in the heart
leave your soul to bleed

Whatever happened to friendship
to the fellowship of man
To caring for your neighbour
lending a helping hand

These days we only give
when we want something in return
Genuine love and friendship
is impossible to earn

This is how the world
thinks and acts today
Real charity and goodness
are from a bygone age

Lets open up our hearts
give to those in need
Shine a little light
let go of all our greed

Lets offer up our friendship
expecting nothing in return
Give a little kindness
live and love and learn

Offer help, hope and warmth
without expecting a single thing
And we might just be surprised
at how much joy giving brings

Outstanding. Both the skill with which you wrote and the all-important message are excellent. Having grown up in poverty, this subject is very close to my heart. Some may call it kharma, but whatever it may be, I believe a score is kept, and that which one sows, so shall they reap. If they offer compassion and charity, it will come back to them. This same message is found in the Bible.

Thanks.
you could live in Dixie, step out on the porch watch the Spanish moss etch a frame on the dragon fly's sorties ,those people are not all gone just a little shy about giving. But you are right giving with a string attached is a pure Yankee thing that a lot of the world is enjoying.Sad .

Hey Cleef you need to spread some of that s**t on my lawn. It might help with the bugs
Random acts of kindness are still out there but it seems like we sometimes have to look harder to find them.

True, Thank you :)
I agree...giving and helping others the best of our ability does bring joy to see them thankful. And humans have really always been like this though...it's not just this time and age.

Thank you :)
in today's world it is all about "me"....plain and simple, there are few out there who give a damn about anything other than themselves. this is a sweet piece of hopeful and wistful prose which does a thorough job of examining this very problem from the point of view of a caring person, wanting to see people behave more humanely. well written!

You speak so much truth here... you don't see much of a person helping a stranger or neighbor anymore... we all think our time is too valuable instead of the value of being selfless. It moments of crisis is when you find out who your real friends are.

Yes! We can cry in our soup as it chills or we can share it while it is still warm and can do good. Well stated and a poem well written.
