Let Go

Let Go

A Poem by Caustic_Dystopia

We run down the sidewalk, hand on my back
Daddy let go, and I zoom down the tarmac.
A few years later and I'm in a huff,
"You don't understand!" I shout in rebuff.
"Daddy, I love him." and your face goes grim.
"You're too young for love, you don't know what it is."
I'm 18 now and we stand in an empty room.
We do our best to ignore the tangible gloom.
We talk a bit less as life gets in the way,
Then headlights in the drive surprise you one day.
A diamond ring glistens, but it's not as bright as me
As you watch me smile and giggle with glee.
All dressed in white as we walk down the aisle,
The man of my dreams looks back and smiles.
Some time passes and I have kids of my own
Cooking breakfast and there's a ring from the phone.
I race down the hall, to room 208
praying to God that I won't be too late.
A frail man lays in a bed,
I'm not ready for this as tears are shed.
You taught me so much, you helped me grow,
But nobody can really teach you how to let go.
