Storybook Lips

Storybook Lips

A Poem by Cameron Gilhooly
"

A common meter poem inspired by a day at the grocery store.

"

Across the registers

And mountains of food

And people bowing their heads,

As if deep in prayer

In their churches and pews

And wearing their Sunday best,

A face looking out

And shining above,

I feel like I’ve seen before.

Not in real life,

But maybe a dream,

Or a novel I read in grade four.

Her lips are distinct,

Perfectly even,

Expertly sculpted or whittled;

Gently swooping,

Like a book on a table

Opened up right to the middle.

The carriage beside me

Holding inside it

A yogi in toddler disguise

Rust colored skin,

Cast iron hair,

A profound knowing look in her eyes.

Gazing at me,

Unblinking and still,

Dazzled by what she is seeing

As if she could spot

My fluttering thoughts

Or think me straight up to the ceiling.
