...The One
A Poem by Colton Warr

Many eyes will be able to see these words
Yet yours are the only that I prefer
Let them become your vision
An idea of this life without you I have interred

Many hearts will be able to feel these words
Yet yours is the only that I prefer
Let them marinate within your arteries
And let the words of any other go unheard

Many smiles may cut through many faces
Yet yours cuts through all of the ages
Let that starry smile of yours shine
And I want to see that smile as we travel to different places

Many souls may detonate into fire
Yet yours connects with mine and inspires
Let our souls eternally intertwine
If I have you, there is nothing else in this life I wish to acquire

                                 *

Four

You have a smile that I would do anything for
As soon as I see it I feel the butterflies frolic within my core
Its perfection is like the slow rolling waves against the sandy shore
And to know that I make you smile the most is a thought I eternally adore

Three

Your hands are as soft as all of the clouds that I can see
They fit so perfectly with mine, I volunteer to be their detainee
And to my heart, these angelic hands of yours hold the key
For when I am interlocked with you I feel utterly free

Two

Looking into your eyes makes me feel like our love is new
I can see the sun and the stars, the world has no better view
I lose myself to their gaze and think this must be voodoo
Then I return to myself and my eyes consume all of you

One

I have met no other human who’s heart has done what yours has done
When I first heard your laugh, I was paralyzed, stunned
And when our lips first met my heart felt as if it was shot by a gun
Is there anyone else you’d rather be with, you ask? None.

                                     *

I am forever thinking to myself, these words are not good enough
How could they ever be for a girl who is so above?
I am forever drinking from the Grail of what we can become
I hope you understand, doll, that this is no bluff

I am forever intimidated to write for a girl like you
But write for you forever is something I must do
What I have implicated is that no matter what we go through
You are the ink within my pen and forever my Muse

There is a man in my life that I live without. I found my voice in poetry because of him. He inspires me. Maybe one day. Your poem touched me because I thought of him. The tears in my eyes are because your words stirred me. Thank you for letting me feel him through your words.

Wow! As always a great write, Colton.
And a wonderful picture of a beautiful woman. Love the black and white/slightly sepia tone pic.
Wonderful words. Love makes the heart and mind go all kinds of places.
Just flow with it.
Twenty years from now you'll be thumbing through a notebook with all these poems, and all the feelings and all the memories of when love was new will come flooding back. Mine were all handwritten in a spiral-bound note pad, and my wife saved every one of them in a ring binder.
Such memories are priceless.
Do enjoy them.

yours are the only ONES i prefer..was this considered? If I may, every that should be changed thusly and yeah I said thusly
I would ditch let in the second stanza fourth line for redundancy reasons.
Many smiles may cut through the faces yet yours cuts through the many ages. Eh, i tried.
The second half of the third stanza falls away from the scheme of rythym you've established so well. might want to look into that.
Would you consider descend intead of detonate or is the idea spontaneaus combustion? If so why not erupt? same two syllables
Again the second half stays but I wonder if I'm not reading it on beat.
I really enjoyed this poem and I couldn't help but tinker because it's very descriptive and well formulated. I'd like to read the other half when I get done teaching, if that's ok?
Always dig your writing. Thanks for writing it.

I like the countdown structure of the poem (good idea). A declaration to the strength of your emotional attachment after one lunar year is sure to endear you with your significant other or cohabiting lover (which ever applies).
That response was just to shows that you can not write about love without emotion, and your poem oozes with it, I hope your lady enjoyed the poem and that you also continue to enjoy each other :~)

Colton, Very well conceived and presented, the countdown format serves to keep the thoughts well organized and the readers' interest piqued. And saying in the last line, "You are the ink within my pen...." puts me to mind of the line in the famous song, "You are the wind beneath my wings." Very well done! take care...dan
