Robins Snow Day

Robins Snow Day

A Poem by Corset
"

Happy Valentine's Day

"
Snow Day
It's been so warm here for so long I'd forgotten
the chill that seeps into your bones,
but the powdery snow,  well, it's magnificent.
There is a Robin on the limb before me
his redbreast the only color to break up
the black and gray of the snow born sky.
The cold ground has grown a white beard
it blankets the warm breast of Earth
suddenly grown hard with cold.
The apartments across from my window
display lollipop balloons growing heavy
with the fresh white burden
 their colors
too washed out with age and wear to compete
My Santa Monkey stares at me with his beady eyes
bright with shining promises
he promises all the colors will return soon.
I'd almost rather they didn't
the bright red stop sign and ever-changing
traffic lights
direct not a soul on their busy way,
the snow falls peacefully almost secretly
as if hiding the mysteries of coming spring.
I'd forgotten how magnificent the snow
and the beating red of my breast.

I remember when our cat (Ms. Abigale) saw her first snowfall. Besprinkled on the windowsill, the robin's province, but scattered then straddled again by a squirrel . Then I realized that animals have no time line other than the changing of the seasons. And it would benefit me to think that it was the snow she was interested in and not the robin. It is how the approbate sanctions formality; how humans discard the animal in favor of the abstract. I, like you, would just rather the red flap of feathers that adapts itself to warm and cold be towed and then bowed by it's own analogies.

Happy Valentines day, and since all holidays are "made up" but not "make believe", I love the one's not yet the bloodlust to some hackneyed alter, to engrave my initials on the nearest elm......dana
