Absence of Light

Absence of Light

A Poem by Darryl Piercy

Absence of Light

The vision of the future
Is the absence of light
Now in the hands
Of the Alt Right

What once was a shadow
Is no longer there
No way to illuminate
What has us so scared

No longer a light
At the end of the way
No way to be sure
What happens today

We have turned out the glow
That we have in our hearts
The rest of us left
With no hope and no part

What becomes of the rights
We have worked so hard to maintain
The new stewards of freedom
Have so much disdain

For those that are different
And do not conform
To their view of the world
You must fit in their norm

What lies ahead
Is yet to unfold
But can we believe
What we have been told

Most of us voted
To end this charade
But our votes do not matter
At the end of the day

We all like to think
That majority rules
But not in America
So we elect us some fools

Not a vote of the people
For if that were true
The lights would be on
For me and for you

So instead no more shadows
Where there is no light
It’s the day in this country
Where we all say Good night

Sad and dangerous times, I think. You can only vote for those who are put forward, but surely better candidates could have been found! Disaster, or new beginning? Time will tell!
