To My Wives

To My Wives

A Poem by David Lewis Paget

You may believe, my ladies dear,

I took away your sun,

To cloak you in my darkness

While our time was left to run;

You may believe I took your youth

And brought you to despair,

But that was not my purpose;

It was life that took us there.

The old recriminations

That have saddened all my years,

As each and every one of you

Went off, in search of tears,

The old recriminations, using

Truths I can’t retract,

Come back to haunt me, every one:

‘Was I as bad as that?’

The life that is behind us now

Is locked in some old hearse,

You’ve moved along, and like the song

You sing another verse,

But I sit in the dark, and hear

Each word you brought undone,

And swear before the living God:

‘I loved you, every one!’

David, was looking to see how long you have been on this site and ran into this ditty. Sad write, but true I would expect. Valentine

i would write the exact same sentiments to my three ex-wives..

was i that bad? and are you going off to look for more tears?

or will you really find happiness with another?

wonderfully written piece...

if any of them would read this...i am sure she would shed a tear of regret as to what she let go of.

Have only married once and haven't found courage enough to do it again, but agree.

Put wonderfully to word.

Awwww a sweet ending David! I can't imagine marrying more than once though.....who would be stupid enough to do it twice? springs to my single, not so young mind....I love the contemplative feel to this look back on your past loves....Smiling at you, Tai
