time bomb

time bomb

A Poem by A.M. Nelson

i asked my watch for the time,
told me to f-on-off.

no manners, only seconds drifting
into paper cups

upturned--
sip on time; in time
as the beat bends the
floor into lava
bananas

and breakfast clubs
wane,

but, by the nose we creep back into
styrofoam,
ring up a taxi, ask for the time
and follow it home into
bed and rested wake
for watch and ask the
watch to quiet on down

as seconds peruse the seconds,
vainly voyeurs unravel
and banana peel gets soggy
on the drool.

open wide,
the end is ticking.
