One More Year

One More Year

A Poem by Desire To Inspire
"

I wrote this before the start of my senior year of high school. It's amazing how fast time goes by.

"

One More Year

I’ve been counting down the days for what has seemed like forever

So how do I explain the feelings that now sit inside

I’m both happy and sad, both excited and scared

For we have finally reached that one last year

One last year as a kid, one last year home with Mom

One last year in this town, one last year in this school

One last year with the people we have always known

One last year inside the comfort zone

This one last year always seemed so far away

But now time’s creeping up to that day

The day when we begin our senior year

The day when that last year is finally here

Broken friendships and wasted time will soon be left behind

For a new chapter in life which our true purposes we will find

From then on nothing will be the same

Your classmates will start to forget all those memories

And only remember your name

Those people who you hung out with

Those people you could talk with for hours

Those people who you ate lunch with every single day

Will soon be going their separate ways

And you’ll remember the times you dreamed about the future

How you swore your friendships would still remain together

But you’ll shed a tear because you’ll remember

Even the best of things cannot last forever

But who actually wants high school to last forever

Who doesn’t want to know what awaits outside that classroom door

Who wants to remain an age which prevents your voice from being heard

Who doesn’t want to find out if in this life there’s something more

Something more than stupid drama

Something more than a GPA

Something more than what we’ve been taught to believe

Something more that we’ll never find unless we leave

But like I said I’m happy yet sad

This year has yet to start but already things are different

I haven’t heard from friends like you would think

For the first time ever I’m learning what it’s like to be alone

Maybe that’s what scares me the most

Being alone

Because once we graduate we’re going to leave

Everything we’ve ever known

Those familiar faces, those familiar places, and the usual routines

We’re going to face all new struggles but this time it’ll be all on our own

And this is frightening for people like me

People who haven’t quite figured out what it means to be your own person

People who are used to blending in

People who haven’t gotten the chance to learn to grow

People who have always liked the comfort of being on the down low

And I’m nervous because this is my last year to try and figure out who I am

And what it is I want

Deciding on a college and then a profession

Will lead me into a time in life where I’ll be making endless choices

This is something I’ve never been good at

Something I have always feared

You see this is our last year doing what we know

Our last year before we decide where to go

It’s our last year where it’s okay to not know who we are

This is our last year before life leads us far

Senior year will be our last year
