The Only One

The Only One

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry

There was one
And one alone
She felt understood her.
The one who was always
Excited when she
Came home from work,
The one who slept
By her side contentedly
Each night,
Whined and cried
When she had to stay late,
The one who
Cuddled with her
Whenever she was down,
Lay next to her when
Her thoughts threatened
To overturn her delicate mind.
She loved this one
            More than the world
            More than life
            More than anything,
So when she died,
She knew this one
Would get everything:
            The house –
                        The lonely house –
            The car –
                        The car she drove
                        To her doldrum job
                        Each day –
            And her money –
                        That she slaved for,
That she gave up everything for,
That she kept no contact with the world for.
Everything
For her dog –
Her loyal dog –
The only one
Who really understood.
