I don't know why

Why do they cry?

I see you crying

I see my mother weeping

I see my father cursing 

And my sister screaming

But I don't know why

I feel the urge to comfort you

To stop the tears falling

I don't want to move

And I don't think I can

But I don't know why

My mother is muttering incoherently 

My dog is pressing his paws on her lap

Licking the salty tears from her face

My dad puts his arm around her shoulder to comfort her

But I don't know why!

My sister falls to her knees 

And cries a mournful cry 

My grandmother holds her tightly 

Muffling the heart wrenching noise in her breast 

But I don't know why

And then I see it

The pale face and blue lips

The hair spread out around a still body

My body

And now I know why
