A strong downturn, a great depression
Proud men turn to their neighbors for food
Yesterday's news talked of recession
Today's outlook leads to a somber mood.
The mighty fall again, a dark cloud looms
As civil unrest rises as at home
The upper-class mansions turn to motel rooms
And the shining seas begin to foam
People are armed, blame is their ammunition
The streets fill with wagging fingers
But as they carry on this age-old tradition
All around them, the real monster lingers
He's in their heart, their mind, their soul
Their motivation for each new day
He's your closet's skeleton, your bridge's troll
The twinkle in your eye with each week's pay
Quietly he crept as a country sat complacent
a malignant demon growing inside
Evil he spread as his feelings were vacant
Soon his face is shown, no longer can he hide
Boldly he steps from behind the curtain
to mock this conceited place
"I've turned you into fools, that is certain!"
He shouts, a devilish grin upon his face
Men now debauched, stealing from one another
victims of this tyrannical beast
Destroying the very earth they once called Mother
their brothers, completely fleeced
Forclosing on their dreams, no way to stay afloat
assiduous men are bankrupt
No longer defended by his castle's moat
Turns a noble man corrupt
There must be a way to turn the tides
to slow this downward slope
Introspective investigations
may be our only hope
For you see this creature not only dwelled
but was also born inside
each of our minds and hearts he swelled
the strings of his dna were tied
Like a million Dr. Frankensteins
we conjured such a spirit
That would latch on to our brothers spines
and make the strongest men fear it
So how do we stop it? One might ask
Is there any hope?
Your answer may not be an easy task
and what if it is "nope"?
What if we're too late? look what we have done
And what damage have we wrought?
How could so many bad things have come
when it was only riches that we sought?
Meeting daily needs we couldn't be content
Satisfaction didn't mean just getting by
Just take a look at all we've spent
Trying to achieve another high
Oh yes, Rome has come to fall again
The empire standing only on pride
Lest we forget Aurelius' reign
The people must fight the fiend inside.
To rebuild, to bring change it seems
Responsibility we each must take
You must give up your selfish dreams
For your own future's sake
It's not to say one cannot achieve or gain
or take opportunities of this new land
It's to say we need to refrain
From the pilfering of our fellow man.
Let us deal the final blow to this beast's chest
Bury the dagger deep into it's heart
A small step towards the problem assessed
But nonetheless, it is a start.
