Prologue

I am not sure what disturbed my sleep. It might have been the rattling of the fan as the rickety blades whirled around in stuttering circles. It might have been the train that passed by ever so faithfully each night as I slept, always certain to sound its horn, loud and screeching, as it reach the point where the tracks ran nearest to my room. It might have been the cowering woman who lived downstairs with her abusive husband, choking back sobs of hot tears as she wondered what w***e her antagonist was spending the night with after their violent fight just hours earlier. She should have left him years ago, to find a better life for herself. The train should have stopped running years ago; it was about to fall into disrepair anyway. My fan should have been replaced years ago, but I was too cheap to buy the expensive model I had seen on display at the store. But the one thing I was most certain about was that I should have moved out years ago.

A VERY well written and interesting start. I love imagry in a piece and this, short as it is, has it in spades. Excellent description. I plan to follow this. What intrigues me most is your book description...

Strange dreams begin to plague a woman when she moves into a new house. But the dreams are only the prelude to even stranger, more horrifying experiences.

This sounds like something I'd want very much to read. And your prologue accomplishes the same.

Well done. :)
