On Every Wall

On Every Wall

A Poem by Emily

I Sit On Her New Brown Couch

She Reminds Me

Of

How Much She Paid For It

2000 Dollars

She Offers Me Nothing

To Drink

I Ask For A Glass Of Water, Please

She Excitedly Tells Me

About Sarah’s

  Drug Addict Husband

I Walk Into The Kitchen

Open Cupboard Doors Until I Find

The Glasses

Dehydrated Now

And The Water Will Not Get Cold

Quickly Enough

I Drink It Warm

I Quietly Listen

To Her Next Story

OF How Nina Is A Hypochondriac

As I Look At Her Walls

  And All I See

Are Photographs Of Her

Face

Plastic Flowers

And An Empty Yellow Ceramic Vase
