Prologue

A Chapter by Shay Bass

Daily I have been receiving letters in the mail by a certain someone. A special someone actually that I will always keep close to my heart. I will always love Kai. He is my boyfriend and I refuse to let him go, but with everything going on in my life, I just cant keep in touch. Not with everything that has happened since he has left for boot camp. His letter today touched my heart. He is hurting so bad that it makes me want to reply but my mother says it wouldnt be such a good idea. His letter reads:
Dear Raina,

This is my fifth time writing you today. I know I won't send them all out but it's the closest thing to feeling at least descent. It makes me feel like you are writing back, but you aren't. I hate this place, I miss you so much. My officers here like to mess with us on a mental level. They tell me you have forgotten about me and that you have found someone else. I refuse to believe them. I know you are still sticking around. I know I will come home to you...right?

Baby, I need a letter in the mail. I am lonely. Write me please?
Love, Kai
As I read this letter from him I noticed a tear drop stained on the paper. Only if he knew the silent tears I shed.

Kai left August 3rd 2007. It has been two years since I have seen him. I miss him dearly. He still tries calling me but I haven't answered the phone. If he does call my mother Answers it sometimes. She tells him I am busy with work or school. He obviously hangs up in disappointment but at least we write letters like before. There is a reason why I can't answer his calls. He doesn't have the same equipment I do to talk on the phone.
It is January 2009 and he will be arriving on my doorstep in a couple days.he is finally coming home from deployment. I am very excited to see him but nervous at the same time. He will have a lot of question on why I ignore his calls. I will only have one answer.

I am now deaf.
