Better to Have Never Loved

Better to Have Never Loved

A Poem by E.V. Black
"

Better to have never loved than to have loved at all.

"

To have loved was painful.

I kept silent through

the entire ordeal.

My thoughts swirled around

in my head.

Too many times before.

First-rate clown

and the one everybody

laughs at.

What else to expect?

The king’s fool inside

never learns twice.

These stupid mistakes

are more than they

will ever come

to understand.

The town drunk

will never stop his

consumption of the

sweet, syrupy liquor.

He keeps telling himself

that he will stop,

that he will be a better man.

When he heads home,

the bar calls to him.

He sits down before

a sweet, cold mug of liquor.

The cycle begins all over again.

Broken promises to himself.

All that is left is

the indulgence and the desire.

What else to expect?

I keep pressing

the emotions down.

I keep saying that

I’ll never care.

Lies. Broken promises.

My stupid heart

just doesn’t known when

to stop hoping.

I am a naive fool

who will never learn.

I will never get what

I really want.

So, why want at all?

Better to have never loved

than to have loved at all.

The story behind this was that I had a tiny little crush on a guy where I work. Unfortunately, he was dating someone else and I was devastated when I learned that.
