A Drawer Full of Autumn

A Drawer Full of Autumn

A Poem by FractalLuna
"

What do you anticipate when you open your dresser drawer? This baby is long, but fun!

"

The night was dark,
The moon was new,
It was eerily quiet.
My heightened sensed grew!
The wind howled through the bluffs,
Bringing a shiver to my bones.
I heard strange sounds,
Even though I was alone!
I ran to the bedroom,
Hoping for reprieve,
Where there I could see,
Something I could hardly believe!
Across the room I eyed a light,
Within the depths of a drawer,
My dresser was illuminated bright,
I felt my intrigue soar!
I tiptoed quietly ever near,
Perking up my well-attuned ear,
When much to my surprise,
A merry melody I could hear!
I crept ever closer,
The dresser seemed far away,

I liked the music,
And felt my body start to sway.
The light hypnotized me,
Dilating my pupils large,
In both fascination and fright,
I felt my arm instinctively charge,
Towards the handle,
Upon the cool, metallic knob,
I sucked my breath in hard,
And could hardly finish the job!
My mind screamed to do it,
Be done with the daunting task,
My hand had a different idea,
This was no time to relax!
I mustered my courage,
Pulled the drawer open fast!
I let out a small cry,
Glad the moment had passed.
I beheld the contents,
Of this amazing soiree,
The music continued,
And I had naught to say.
I stood and watched,
Delighted in my discovery,

Entranced and awed,

Deep in a reverie.

The contents of the drawer,

Were not what I was to expect,

Linens and cottons,

Were last there unchecked.

My face alight,

I watched and swayed,

While the dancers danced,

And the orchestra played.

This gala was new,

Even to my experienced eyes,

There were no humans,

Only ghouls and goblins, to my surprise!

They were beautifully adorned,

Not scary nor disfigured,

This bright menagerie,

Was not something I could have pictured!

They paid me no mind,

Too caught up in their footing,

When suddenly I saw,

Something even more off-putting!

A rather large oval,

Waddled into the scene,

It was then I realized,

It wasn't so obscene.

He was glossy and orange,

With a smiling face,

Every inch of him,

Was put into place.

He bumbled and sashayed,

Laughing as he swayed,

Before my very eyes,

Was a pumpkin on parade!

His partner was a spider,

All black and glittering,

Six of her delicate legs,

In a wrap-around jittering!

The drawer was gaily decorated,

I took note,

So warm and inviting,

It sent my soul afloat.

I dared not speak a word,

So I sat down on my chair to watch,

Then I saw a deft black crow,

Playing a game of hopscotch!

His feathers were sleek,

His coattails flapping madly,

Then he was off to the punch bowl,

Where a group was chatting gladly.

I saw witches and cats,

Chatting wildly about their world,

Until a ghostly mist,

About their legs suddenly swirled.

It hovered and ebbed,

Aglow from the luminance,

"What could it be?” I wondered,

So afar from humanness.

The aura moved quickly,

Hither and thither,

Its energy changed,

And started to wither.

It transformed into a mysterious figure,

Unbeknownst to my person,

It was large and furry,

A beast of a varied version!

It spoke aloud to the party,

Boasting their excitement to excess,

When suddenly a flash!

And the group was gone in success.

The drawer laid open and bare,

No sign of the group anywhere!

My jaw dropped open,

All I could do was sit and stare!

Had I dreamt this wondrous gala?
Why did they leave?
My mind circled and grasped,

What I could hardly believe.

I closed the drawer tight,

Caught my reflection in the vanity mirror,

Confusion set stern upon my face,

Wondering if the creatures would reappear.

I listened then,

To wind howling deep in the night,

Too excited to move,

So there I sat, awed with delight...

A magical mystery tour of the mind, waking or asleep, with the emphasis on magic and mystery. This came to life vividly in my mind, almost fantasia like. Maybe they weren't ignoring you, just oblivious to something as giant as a human, they way ants don't freak out when and if they even see us.
Definitely has a feel like it should be set to classical music, with lots of pace and wonder to enthral us all. Excellent job on this. :)
