Pay The Piper

Pay The Piper

In the shadows of the night

 We had fun
Following him one by one,
as he played his merry tune.
But you know you can't win
with a life full of sin,
dancin' under the 'ole evil moon.
You have to pay the piper.

With all social ills,
the booze and the pills,
So easy too feel no pain.
But there is no end,
you do it again and again
and then what do you really gain?
You have to pay the piper.

The high never lasts,
It's always blast after blast
and ain't it a damn cryin' shame!
But time's running out,
In agony you shout
and you've only your own self to blame.
You have to pay the piper.

You're on a road leading nowhere,
Self-destructing without care,
the 'ole handbasket ticket to hell!
But if you get wise
You'll open your eyes
and not give the devil your soul to sell.

Discard these weeds.
and from this haze
step into the light.
No longer to pay the piper
for his dirty deeds
Stop living in the shadows of the night.

the world has a history of substance abuse, but drug problems of all kinds still ravage our homes. We obviously don't learn from others' mistakes. We have to trip over the same wire they did before we learn our lesson. Great poem

This was a very chilling poem, but not in a bad way. I liked the deep meaning in it, and i like how you referenced the pied piper. Often fairy tales have a lot to teach us about life, and morals, so i'm glad you saw that.
great poem!

Too many self destruct on the road to fame, far too many.
Fran this was an amazing write. Chilling and to the point,
such a waste of precious lives....so sad.

Very well penned indeed my friend!
