The Last Stretch

The Last Stretch

A Poem by Fran Marie

Driving on this deserted highway.
bitter air bites loneliness
surrounding snow casts
a dull silver overcast

shadows blur my vision
stealing the monotonous scene
these miles of boring straight road

I fall into my mind's eye
    to a misty memory
bits and pieces
  once clear now appear vague

yet~a sweet hazed
picture of you..

waiting by green garland
  and red glowing lights
comes into view

soon the hush of evening
will rush in~ blushing darkness
with snowflakes~in the distance
as I drive the last stretch...
                  and
I'll be there with you tonight

Thanks for taking us on your beautiful reverie, lyrical, tender, with imagery evocative of travel "home" during the holidays. This poem/song warmed my heart.

Oh what a scene my friend ... the snow at night .. driving home .. if the wind is small enough it is so quiet, serene and yes .. maybe a bit haunting ... i spent all my adult years living in SD and I know that road well ... even I 90 can become deserted during a storm ... i feel the warmth inside that car .. growing from knowing its the last stretch .. soon I'll be home where family hold the hearth's heat ... mmmmmmm really enjoyed "The Last Stretch", Fran ..thanks for sharing!

I was with you on this journey. A long, cold winter drive, but the reward at the end of it, surely filed with warmth. From your memory bank. Lovely write Fran.

You are very welcome.
sometimes I still have certain people in mind whom I miss...and this reminds me of past relationships, especially one...I drove Many miles on route 57 to get back up to her in Lockport.
flat, flat boring road...nothing to see except the snowflakes and me cautiously driving in my
little Rambler American. Memories triggered by your poem....
I hope you were safe during the storms Friday night.
so much damage....frightening and sad.

It's a beautifully piece, it made think of my travels the good and the bad along with sorrow but I was blessed with hope and now I thank mother earth and father sky for the beauty that surround us. I like it, it could be a traveler creed. Thank you for sharing.

Gee
This reminds me of driving from our home in England to Scotland to be with my wife's family at Christmas, usually putting Chris Rea( could be misspelled) on the CD to listen to " driving home for Christmas " as we made the 400 mile journey on traffic jammed motorways.
Enjoyed your words Fran Marie.
