God and I Shoe Shopping

God and I Shoe Shopping

A Poem by Freder Fredersen (aka Grady)
"

Yellow with black stripes.

"

in the mall parking lot on a cloudless Tuesday,
I have a sweet conversation
with God
it’s a bit one-sided,
yet, still quite fulfilling.

in the first accessible shoe store,
a large pink woman tells me I need a relationship
with God,
I tell her I was just talking to him outside.
she puts her hand on my head, and begins
speaking in tongues.

God and I decide
to leave her to her babbling
and try finding what we need in another shoe store.
I keep my peace as we leave,
but God can’t stop laughing

I hope she didn’t hear him.
well, at least he’s opening up a bit.

wonder if the Chinese food place
is serving yet
all this spirituality’s making me hungry

God would definately love Chinese food (who doesn't?) but shoes...I'm not so sure. I love that God laughs at her uncontrolably. I always believed that people put alot more morals and restrictions on religion than God would like us to. This is just a fun piece but still has a serious note to it and makes me remember how God is supposed to be eveywhere. In fact, my dad enjoys saying 'God and I have a good relationship, we understand each other so why the hell would I screw it all up by going to church?'

In one section of the Apocrypha, there is a short verse where Jesus throws everyone wearing Air Jordans out of the temple...this is wry, visual, and wholly appealing.

God really wouldn't make me go shoe shopping. I can't believe it. Not my God. ;)

Great write, full of your wit and wisdom.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, as one living in the bible belt. Terse and witty would be a good way to describe it, so would buk-esque. I wonder if left alignment on the page might suit this better.. my own hang-up I suppose. Good piece. : )

This is great! It's a nice light-hearted take on the old spirituality vs. religion question. I like the idea that everyone finds God in their own way, and does not need to be told by someone else how to find Him, and that He is immediately and easily accessible to all whenever they need Him. Why do you have to be in your darkest hour to have a need to communicate with God? Why wouldn't you get the urge to discuss things with Him while shoe shopping, the same way you feel like grabbing your cell phone to gab with Mom about... really nothing.

I love it!
