EDITH PIAF,,, what a wonderful cabaret singer ... only 47 when she died... Ah, little sparrow

"
LITTLE SPARROW

Edith Gassion, the famous little sparrow
La vie en rose, was the song in her marrow
Intense vital publicity was Leplee's motto
Dressed in black, in a dark caverned grotto

Friends like Jacques Borgeat & Maurice Chevalier
Cocteau's Le Bel indifferent, was the one act play
Yves Montand flew quickly under her wing
WIthin a year, he was a passe' thing

Marcel Cerdan died in the year forty-nine
The love of her life, she'd forever pine
In 51,  a crash almost claimed her life
Morphine & booze would cut like a sharp addictive knife

Paris Olympia was her claim to fame
Non Je ne regrette, saved it from shame
L'homme de Berlin, was her last recorded song
Died at 47, but the legend still lives on strong

I am in love with this piece. You have painted a vivid picture of a full life, with friends, loves, losses, and a life that was well lived. I liked the style, it was almost confessional, but not autobiographical no. This is actually giving me curiosity as to who she was, as I am familiar with the other players...
I am glad I stopped by here to read.

Okay - so I've got it. Finally. You're going to have to put up with a Brit witter now, sorry.

Poetry has many forms now but this is the most valid in extending out to the roots of what poetry was all about - why it was invented for goodness sake. Rhyme, rhythm, story telling when there was no literacy but the sound and sentiment of what they were trying to convey meant that from campfires to nursery rhymes to Shakespeare's globe, we were there to extend today's, yesterday's and tomorrow's news and emotions in a way that people couldn't help but listen to. I'm not against the bleeding heart, complex and convoluted poetry that readers pick over (for chrissakes I'm one of them) but I'm cross that more don't 'get' this on here because it's important. I have one friend on here that I think will love it. I'm going to call her over.

I sound like a batty old fruitcake (forget rolling your eyes at me - it happens everyday :) ) but it's true! I've read another of your poems here - laughed, become informed and *enjoyed* it with no pretensions but that is not to take away from the cleverness of it. I really admire it. I couldn't hope to emulate it. And believe me, I've tried.
