One Night Substitute

One Night Substitute

A Poem by a Messenger

This piece was written about forty years ago and was actually intended to be song lyrics, but, I don't know anything about writing music, so I never did anything with it.

"

The girl who sits and smiles at me in the glow of candlelight,
is not the girl whose love I miss and hunger for tonight.

She's just a girl to ease the pain of being here alone,
just a one night substitute for the girl I left at home.

No this is not the girl I love who's sitting next to me,
she's just a girl I found tonight to keep me company.

She's just a girl to ease the pain of being here alone,
just a one night substitute for the girl I left at home.

She's not a girl you'd call your own or ever learn to love,
she's not a girl you'd promise the moon and stars above,
she's just a girl to ease the pain of being here alone,
just a one night substitute for the girl I left at home.

She's just a girl to ease the pain of being here alone,
just a one night substitute for the girl I left at home.

Being unattached but attached for the moment, how interesting! It's funny how sometimes we can be with someone and still feel along. We go out and search for something to fill the emptiness and void only to find the same loneliness. Sometimes it's just better to share the emptiness, even for a moment, with someone else is lonely. I really understand this poem from the past. This poem is something that happens in the here and now but is always laid to rest in the past.

Twenty years ago?????????????????? Wow! You have ALWAYS been a great writer!!!!!!!!! This is an amazing piece. The lust and hunger for one is there, although the love and passion for another is also evident. I'm speachless. Your poems are insightful and always keep me reading. You should've made it a song. I think it would totally have rocked!!! Maybe it still will :)

I can understand where you come from... This has a great flow to it... and i think that it would've made a good song if put to music.... Great job!

Substitutes only make the loneliness, more vivid. They are only a reminder, of whom they are not, and can never be.

O!
i feel sorry for the narrator and the girl.....
shows how one thinks and says so much about judgement......the judgement of ourselves and of others......

it sounds like a country song to me.

x,
O!
