Casualty

A Poem by Geralyn Miller

         A battle of wits

He so boastfully challenged.

    Yet he came unarmed.

I love how you can fill a haiku with so much power. The title sends a breath of regret over the poem, indicating that there's possibly more meaning beneath the surface. The word sounds really work in this - the erumpent 't's in the first line, the taunting 'o's and 'll's in the second (and the rhythms in those last two words), and the grave 'm's in the third. I like also the way that the last line reads slower. It's really quite perfect; I wouldn't change a thing.
