Death Came to Hearthold

Death Came to Hearthold

A Poem by Geralyn Miller

Death came to Hearthold

as night fell,

crept in unheralded,

over the grand stone wall,

past neatly trimmed trees,

and manicured lawns.

Death came to Hearthold,

around the massive fountain,

through the double entry doors,

then up the carved staircase.

Down a long hall,

Death entered the nursery wing;

past the nurserumaid

watching over the new baby girl.

Death came to Hearthold,

through the playroom,

then Death opened the door

and gazed upon

the heir to Hearthold.

Such a handsome boy,

black of hair

with bright blue eyes,

impish smile,

a three year old joy;

smart, sweet, loving boy.

Death stole the heir to Hearthold,

without warning,

without sound,

without reason.

Death came to Hearthold,

an equal opportunity

destroyer.

Great piece! I think that if you wanted to edit it a bit, you could work on the flow and maybe replace some of the repetition with more figurative language and/or imagery; aside from that though, nice job.
