For Jack Kerouac

For Jack Kerouac

A Poem by Jim Given
"

An ode to Jack Kerouac and the "Beat Poet" "lifestyle".

"

Prescription less,

And

Out of date pills,

And

Cheap vodka,

On the floor

By my bed,

Oh to have

Just a drop of

Orange juice,

Its sweet citric acid,

Or simply

Anything at all,

To impede

My deliberations,

Tethered to the

Flat screen TV

In an hourly " rate motel,

The Tenderloin,

San Francisco,

Broken pencils

And urine

Stained paper,

70’s or 80’s porn

Classic hairy,

 Brood mare,

Unsatisfyingly

Saturated,

 And

Unsanitary,

The off-white,

Talc " like dust

Scattered across

My broken glasses,

Interrupted

By the mildew colored,

Gray, yellow " green,

 Morning sun,

Comic relief
