You Never Knew

You Never Knew

A Poem by Elizabeth

You hurt more than you’ll ever know,

I don’t think you ever do know

That when you’re with me

You do more harm than good.

You might not know how this is,

But it really is quite simple:

I love you, and you love me-

Or at least I think-

But our love cannot be.

You love my “whom,”

But not my “what,”

And though I can change my “whom,”

My “what” is what  it is, and you cannot change that.

So it comes to pass,

That when time passes and we are close

All I can think of is how much I love you,

And then I remember what I am.

I want you to love me, the way that I love you,

But you never will.

Because you never will

I prefer to forget.

I prefer to forget just who you are,

Because then I can love me,

The way I want you to.

You make me happy,

You make me sad,

You speak of a future

That I’ve never had.

You whisper things,

Beautiful things:

Thoughts. Feelings.

A lie here, a lie there.

I love your lies:

They are my dreams.

And my dreams aren’t lofty,

But “bittersweet” captures them:

The dream is bliss, the reality, bitter.

So please, tell me your lies.

Whenever I sleep, or when I shut eyes,

I want to see you, to feel you,

If just for a minute, a moment.

That minute, or moment, is all I ask for,

Enough to get by,

Enough to say goodbye, even.

Although I never want to,

I really must go.

You know why, yet you really don’t.

Don’t you? It’s all about you.

I love you, I love you, a thousand times,

I love you
