Surprise Meeting

She was in town for a meeting at the center

a troop of soldiers were scheduled to leave for war

her brother was a colonel and a chief presenter

her lover watched as she stepped out of her car

she climbed the steps to the modern civic hall

having no idea he had just arrived in town

Amercan flags were draped over each and every wall

she had concern for her brother and wore a tiny frown

the presentations were done with splendor

stars and stripes were played by the color guard

everyone applauded loudly even the program vendor

her lover in disguise at the back holding a program card

as the ceremonies ended farewells and safe returns

were offered up by all the families and civic leaders

there faces still showed slight worries and concerns

as hugs and kisses were shared by all the greeters

he waited as she started to leave the main hall

he had not told her he would make the drive

their affair not intended for the town at all

the hour now approached half past five

as she started out the main entrance door

he bumped her slightly from the side

she glanced up to beg pardon and nothing more

their eyes met their worlds would collide

she gasped for air as he smiled and said please excuse

you see they had never actually ever met before

exchanging photos and words of love were the only clues

and now they stood staring this was so much more

she made it back down the steps to the waiting car

her mind spinning a thousand miles per hour

she glanced back up at this stranger just once more

he stood there holding a bouquet of sunflower

as the car sped away a smile came over her face

his surprises were one reason she loved this guy

wondering if he might arrive at her place

probably not and she knew why

I never would bring my wife and family to my deployment meeting place. It was too sad. I left wife in bed. That was sad enough. A very sad poem. Saying goodbye to a soldier is always a hard task. A excellent story. Soldiers give up a lot to defend our freedom.

A spark of love and then off to war. Sad and poignant. Good job, GLP!
