WANTED

WANTED

A Poem by Holly Mason

The perfect boyfriend
my mom always wanted
a decent job
varsity quarterback
he was a nice guy
my mom beamed

I like to surf
night surfing is the best
so my friend had purchased me
a new board
his grandmother had just passed
his whole family was in town
we go to the families hotel rooms
directly on the beach
the posh suite had been rented
to lighten the sad room
I say "What did you do?Rob a bank?"
supposed to be funny
now my friend and I head out to night surf
new board under my arm
hair in the wind
we surfed for four hours
heading back in
we go to his new jeep
in the parking lot
BAM!!!get on the ground
"GET ON THE GROUND!!!"
it was the F.B.I.
guns drawn everywhere
we had passed several
of the faces around me
in the hotel lobby and halls
turns out
they had robbed a bank
I was questioned for 11 hours straight
they replayed the room tape
over and over and over
"What did you do?Rob a bank?"
"What did you do?Rob a bank?"
"What did you do?Rob a bank?"
over and over and over
the perfect boy friend
that still writes to my mom
from his cell
she still beams
I had been cleared
after several months
I never even went in a court room
a knock at the door about 6 months later
the F.B.I. took posesion of anything
that my friend had bought me
good bye I say
write another letter my mom says
perfection is not always what it seems to be

Sadly, life can be like this, Holly. The perfect man is, anything but perfect. Yet we hold on this image, we have of them.
