Stuck in a Box

Stuck in a Box

A Poem by Sarah Kaufmann
"

This is a creative response to "The Children's Hour" by Lillian Hellman

"
I was raised in a box.
People would always say:
"Just be yourself,"
But make sure you don't leave
Your box.

Cramped legs transformed into
Cramped mind,
Cramped imagination,
Hyperventilation was in style,
And so was I.

Don't love her.
Stop thinking that.
Never wear blue.
Shut your mind.
It's all simply a phase.

Phases of seeing potential, but
Ignoring it.
Phases of naive wonder, and
Learning to push it away.
Phases of wanting to dance, but
Noticing who was watching.

A board I became.
A flap in a cardboard box.
Room for movement,
But never more.
Stuck in a box.
