Definition

The size of my waist does not define me,

The colour of my hair does not define me,

The size of my feet do not define me,

The colour of my skin does not define me,

The jewellery I wear does not define me,

The tattoos I have do not define me,

The desire to shave does not define me,

The shape of my body does not define me,

You do not define me.

 

My actions define me,

My attitude defines me,

My passion defines me,

My morals define me,

I am the only one who defines me.

I am strong,

I am independent,

I am self reliant,

I am able,

I am not susceptible to labelling,

I am a confident woman who needs no tags,

That does not fall under the pressure of social

Stereotypes/ convention or fashionable indoctrination.

I hasten to say that I am no judge of poetry, having read only a limited amount. It has not been my preference. Having said that, I do like this poem. I love the message. In the US, it is very likely that Hillary Clinton will announce that she will be running for President soon. That will usher in a barrage of mysogyny that will be staggering. Therefore, messages like this are important. I suppose if I were to offer any critism, it would be that I would like more examples of society's expectations that fail to define a woman as well as the things which do define; for example, women are often defined by others' opinions of their breasts, whether full or flat, seldom defined by their intelligence or expertise.
