Paranoid

Paranoid

A Poem by Alicia Nicole

A single flame flickers in the blackness, illuminating the walls and casting shadows as one foot follows the other in a slow waltz of building fear.
A pounding heart secretly frights behind a wall of quivering flesh.
A scream filling ever wave breaking the eerie silence with a sudden quake, only an animal stalking along in this midnight's fog.

Flicker. Step. Flicker. Step.
A rhythm it becomes as the shadows creep with an empty presence.
Flicker. Step. Flicker. Step.

Sullen air filling lungs.
Wounded feet shuffling rugs.
Strong hands gripping heat.
Dying hearts mixing adrenaline.

Flicker. Step. Flicker. Step.
Searching around the bleakest corners, cautiously glancing through the windowless screens, envisioning black shadows coursing through the night, ice like chills trickling down a spin.
Boom. Boom. Boom. BOOM.

Feet lifted off the ground in measly fright, a calloused hand rushing too a chilled chest, a sudden breath as a heart beats beneath a worn shirt.

Step after step.
Breath after breath.

Fingers grasping safety.
Sweaty palms grasping chilled bronze.
Shaking wrists twisting.

Flicker... Flicker... Flicker...

Paranoia envelops every sense, it takes over a body and murders its common logic.
