Here's To Us

Here's To Us

A Poem by Amy
"

Two of my friends started going out and before hand I was hyperhyper close to both of them and then the friendship, especially with the guy, just stopped and it hurt.

"
You pull me closer only to have me realize
How much distance is between us.
We sit, side by side in the dark
Not touching
And my words flood the air
So maybe you won't be able to breathe
And maybe the inevitable silence that will follow
Won't judge me and all my self-consciousness.

This, these words, this everything, has stretched between us so far
That I find myself wondering
What it looked like when we were close.
Goddamn you for making me question
What is supposed to be so secure.
Like brothers. Like sisters.
Like Hell.

Remember when the words that pushed at the back of my mouth
Were seized by what we are,
And formed into an intimate
"How are you?"
You wouldn't, would you?
There are a lot of things
That you won't ever know
But that's OK
Because there hasn't been a hole in this distance.
Because you are who you are and you aren't who you aren't.

To us, my darling.
I'll drink to that.

What feeling do you get from it? Did I come across to scathing or emo?

Wow!! You expressed a moment that we have all experienced at one time or another - that uncomfortable silence - perfectly! I'm impressed. Not only by this particular line but by the entire poem. Beautifully written Amy. And don't worry about whether it comes across "too" emo or scathing (it doesn't) because there is no such thing with poetry. It's intended I believe as an expression of self, of emotion ... it cannot be overly anything if it's heartfelt.

Excellent work :)
