Lyric Poem

A Poem by Isaiah McDaniel

There is a hole and I tried to fill it with money

I’m just what you made God

Here I am staring at your perfection

As I sit here in misery

Now I’m attracting moths who claim the night

This is our last night but it’s late

We will drive ourselves insane

Then I’ll follow you into the dark

I have these thoughts to the point of no return

That illuminate the “No’s” on the vacancy signs

So I want to write my words on the face of today

And now I’m pulling your disguise

I’m praying you’ll give me insight between white and black

And when your soul embarks

Then I’ll follow you into the dark

I was afraid of the dark

But now it’s all that I want

Now I embrace the darkness in the alley ways

I’ll Take my fate to wherever you want

So now we will sail through an empty night

As I sit here in misery

I think this shows the deep intensity of the war inside of us, between good and bad, light and dark. If you're Christian, you see God's perfection and if you're in pain he seem unattainable, and cruel. You drown in your own acid rain, suffocate in your own smothering black darkness. I think (to me at least) this illustrated that perfectly. That and the struggle between dark and light.

I like how the poem really gets that dark message across to the reader.

The imagery of darkness is strong in this, though the diction leads the reader in a struggle between the dark and the light. I felt like I was walking down a dark street at night, looking for a friend.
