The Dowry Tide

The Dowry Tide

A Poem by J.A.Bentley

To wade through the dowry tide
Of promised wage that darkness hide
A negative glimpse against life
For it holds all that which life is not:
A secondhand testimony
Hung in tatters proudly
Around a twig-thin neck
Nutrition formed from scraps with a side of suffocation
Prepare your blinds, shutters, hammer and nails!
Fill in your gaping holes; sew up your shredded rags
With ample supplies of delusions and the hope that
The next person who sees you is as deluded as you.
Jump happily in your chains, knowing that someone
Could be chained tighter than you!
Frown at the passing saint clothed in white
For his Lord says,” My burden is light”

Bravo. I lost the rhythm half way through, but didn't even care. Of course maybe it was intentionally written that way.
