Nostalgia

Nostalgia

A Poem by Emilia Lowenstein
"

Why the past hurts.

"
Nostalgia

It riles up the fallen leaves, blowing them around,

Bringing back images that like to dance through your mind.

Stirring up emotions and pulling them from their beds.

Calling them to a waltz.

And in that lively dance, they'll mingle,

Sending forth feelings through the spine.

And winter's knife slices through the memories,

Making you wish you were back further in time.

Back when everything was simple as the sky,

And more beautiful than a snowflake's perfection,

Purer than the laugh of a baby,

More admirable by far than anything ever done before.

Childhood.

When nothing needed to have an explanation,

And everything unexplainable was magic.

When stars were fireflies that had flown too high,

And when love was laying under clouds together, holding hands.

When life was merely an adventure to be made,

And no treasure chests needed to be found.

When accidents were scraped up knees,

And fear was hiding under blankets when it stormed.

As soon as you realize the mistake that you made--

Sending that childhood away,

You'll wish it back to you in the present,

And wonder why you wanted it gone.
