Destiny

Destiny

A Poem by JLMatthews

Destiny

There was at least a whisper once

Of hope deep in my heart

But things have changed, I see now

That I must stay apart

It’s possible, as I look back

That I just didn’t see

That which I had sought so long

Was right in front of me

Its plain and simple bitterness

That makes it not feel right

Because for years I’ve only seen

The pain in others’ plight

Perhaps I’m just too critical

Of everyone I know

It’s said love is for everyone

I just don’t think its so

I’ve been so very close to love

But now it’s oh so clear

I just can’t love after all

It’s true, that which I fear

And so my path will be as follows

My heart will not be shown

Now I see my destiny

Is to live my life alone

I think the every other rhyme scheme works well. Well thought out, flow nicely when read aloud.

I do find the usage of so many contractions distracting, but that is just me.

I really like this piece, I've definitely felt the same way more than once. I'm usually not a big fan of structure, but in this poem, it works well. Very nice.
