For Shame and Honor

For Shame and Honor

A Poem by Jason Joiner

Dead men all naked
Lying sleepily
Like statues in the dark
Carved from craven stone
No life breathed well
Into their bones
And turning with might
Into motion and life
No man No more
Shall e’er inherit the earth
So long as convinced men stay
Of death’s dominion
Yet hope burns through
Like a feeble flame
Precariously lit in wind and rain
For those whose hearts beat with blood
For those who’s burning and raging
Cursing and biting anger
Leads them to toil in faith
Good faith
That they work not alone
That more and more
Shall men awaken
To find their bindings oppressive
To begin at pulling and tearing
Breaking of their bones and spilling of their blood
To break free until again free
They shall be
When the light of man
Glows bright in night
And the shadows long stretch
Until in glorious light they flee
And all those lying naked
Shall be revived in shame
That they left their sons to the teeth of hell
While in weakness they chose their sleep
