Spring of my Life

Spring of my Life

A Poem by Jayanthi Manoj

Where were you last summer

When we were having a sunbath

And getting our skin tanned?

Where were you last summer

When I was enjoying the mangoes

In our neighbour’s mango grove?

Where were you last rainy season

When we waded through

The overflowing gutters?

Where were you last rainy season

When I got drenched

Thro’ the hole in my umbrella?

Where were you last autumn

When we shed our fashion

Searched for new leaves of garments?

Where were you last autumn

When I had fallen dried leaves

Saved as bookmarks?

Where were you last winter

When we pulled ourselves to bed

Slept early and work up late?

Where were you last winter

When I burnt the tip of my finger

Warming myself near the fireplace?

But I know,

That you’ve come for the Spring

Out of your hiding place

And laugh at me and say,

     “Oh Mama!

You couldn’t find me

       for seasons

You searched your right

         your left

Your front and your back

         all around

   But never inside you.

Now that I’ve come

It’s always spring in your life”.
