Submission

A Poem by Katie Foutz Voss

You would do this?
For an exaggerated kiss.
Hurt yourself, take a risk.
Pucker your lips, don't make a fist.
Either way, no one takes back
the blood dripping from finger to wrist.

Does it seem better here?
Not seeing what is clear.
Shutting down, staving off fear,
forcing yourself to let someone else steer.
Either way, you can't take it back,
you've lost yourself, dear.

Could it mean that much?
A disembodied touch.
You forget, you think you're tough,
think you've really had it rough.
Either way, it'll come back
when you think you've had enough.

Bet you like how it feels?
Being pushed head over heels.
Giving in, even if it isn't real.
Setting aside the one-time deal.
Either way, they don't give it back,
after it's lost its seal.
