Alarm

Alarm

A Poem by Katie Foutz Voss
"

oh... damn.

"

I can't tell you why your voice
ignites in me this strange submission,
how I burn to do what pleases you. And yet,
I'm selfish, cursing you and distancing you,
only to apologize later with all my strength.
My pain becomes your pain, which returns to me.

Outside my window an alarm sounds,
steady and warning, like this heartbeat
that warms at your touch, trembles
when I realize how unyielding this emotion is
to which I cling desperately. Foolishly,
I continue on, grasping for hope.

It's taking all of me to say nothing.
The truth burns alongside this passion,
dual flames fighting each other recklessly.
I'm burning alive! Scorched on the inside,
dying to tell you what I feel just once. Dying
to make you feel alive just by my living.

I can't tell you what I feel, let alone
why I feel it. I just wish I could warn you
that I do feel something, if only
I had an alarm that would sound at your heart.
It would say, "Love will come through."
And your heart would open itself accordingly.

I can only take so much of your writing. It splits me open.

Just another honest open loving gentle poem of truth. You have a future as a published poet if you chose to pursue such. I'm not sure if that's a curse or a compliment of both :-)

This particular stanza strikes me as beautiful honesty at its best:
"It's taking all of me to say nothing.
The truth burns alongside this passion,
dual flames fighting each other recklessly.
I'm burning alive! Scorched on the inside,
dying to tell you what I feel just once. Dying
to make you feel alive just by my living."
The one you love is lucky to hold your attention, if this is based on truth.
Beautifully written, simple, and honest. Those are always the best kind of poems to read. Anyone who has ever loved anyone can identify here.
If only hearts would really just open at the sound of love wanting to come in.
This piece makes me want to read more of your work, to see what I've been missing.
