Winterbird

Winterbird

A Poem by Katie Foutz Voss

Should out this window a poet fly
in her parchment form or otherwise
know it's more than ink that sings
and more than just some words with wings
that flutters gently in the snowy skies.

What lovely song to lovers she's sung,
in the bright beauty of summer and sun.
It shines on elsewhere, but would she away?
To an easier path could the poet stray,
or remain until the hardship is done?

She moves delightfully in the frosty air,
having grown feathers, golden and fair.
The season is frozen, but passion is stirred;
the poet takes flight as a winterbird.
Despite any storm, she stays on there.

I'm trying to decide if the lilting rhythm and the rhyme helps or not... sometimes it flows a little roughly - but then maybe that is intended... as the poet takes wing in her fancy but stays grounded in reality. Well, I enjoyed thinking about it!
